Captains Andy LoCascio, Rich Tenreiro, and John Marino of American Sportfishing Charters (516 457-8715) join forces and head to Huntington, NY to get in on some red hot fall diamond jigging action on the Long Island Sound.  They tangle with monster blues and big schoolie bass in a never ending all out blitz.   They illustrate the correct way to use jigs with teasers and finish the day with some awesome topwater action.  If you have questions about any of the equipment used during the show, please contact us or  send us a message
The spinning rod and reel combo seen on the show featured a Shimano Spheros 5000 reel on a 6'6" Trevala rod rated for 50100lb braided/fused line (model TVS66MH).

The conventional rod and reel combo we recommend features a Shimano Torium 20 reel on a Tallus conventional rod  (model TLC-70MHA).  This is a very versatile conventional outfit and is perfect for nearly all diamond jigging applications.

The spinning reel was loaded with  30lb Berkley Fireline which is attached to a 3ft length of 50lb Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader using a #10 Mustad Rolling Swivel. The surface plugs used were 6" (1 3/8oz) Yo-Zuri Surface Cruiser and Hydro Pencil plugs.  Both plugs are easy to work, have tremendous casting distance, and draw dramatic strikes from the fish.

The conventional reel was loaded with 30lb Berkley Big Game which is attached to 4ft length of 80lb Yo-Zuri Disappearing Pink Fluorocarbon leader using a #10 Mustad Rolling Swivel.  A 2inch dropper loop was tied in the middle of the leader.   The dropper loop was passed through the eye of a 7/0 Mustad Ultrapoint Beak Bait style hook. A Berkley Gulp Alive 4inch Swimming Mullet was threaded onto the hook until the hook eye was covered. The swimming mullet was sprayed with Mustad Activate Spray.  This product is prefect for soft baits.  It is very easy to apply and re-apply it as needed (every couple of drifts).  The rig was topped off with either a 4oz or 6oz hammered chrome diamond jig.

A Berkley Fish Flipper Release Tool was used to ensure that all the fish were returned quickly and safely to the water.  This tool allows the angler to release any lip hooked fish with ever touching.  It eliminates the chance that the angler will be hooked and minimizes wear and tear on the fish.

Capt Andy and Capt Rich wear bibs, jackets, shirts, and shorts from Old Harbor Outfitters.  On their offshore trips they also use the unique fighting belts and tech shorts developed by the fishermen at OHO.  They also offer a huge selection of fishing bags.  The folks at Old Harbor Outfitters have a complete line of gear that addresses the needs of every inshore and offshore angler.
The raging currents and big fish made the net choice especially critical.  A Frabill Powercatch net with it's extendable handle was used and ensured that none of the fish were lost at boat-side.  This is a a great net that stores easily and all you have to do is slide, lock and load and it is ready to go!
The boat used was a 2895CC Triton powered by twin 250hp Mercury Verados.  This boat is the real deal. With a deep-v hull and sharp entry, the 2895 will knife through big seas that would leave most boats back at the dock.  The deck layout makes it the perfect platform for both inshore and offshore, plugging, trolling, or fishing your favorite hot spot at anchor.  Click here to learn more about this incredible boat or click here to learn about the gear and Raymarine electronics on this boat.
LoadRite supplied the tandem axel roller trailed used to haul the boat.  This trailer made launching and recovery a breeze and provided a real sense of security on the road.  Click here to locate the LoadRite dealer nearest to you.
All the clothes worn by Capt Andy and Rich were embroidered by Darla Hall at Stitches by SWYCE.  This is an embroiderer that caters exclusively to peoples passions!  Be it a fishing vessel, club, event or favorite activity, Stitches by SWYCE can create the perfect image for shirts, caps, jackets and more.
