Black Drum Tackle
There are two rod and reel combos that we recommend for fighting black drum. The first combo featured a Shimano 20N Torsa reel on a 6’6″ Trevala rod rated for 50-100lb (model TVC66-MH). This outfit is typically used for butterfly jigging but, is also a great outfit for Black Drum. The reel is incredibly powerful an perfect to dealing with these flat bodied fish in a strong current. The rod is sensitive enough to show even the softest pickups which Black Drum are notorious for!
The second combo featured a Shimano Torium 20 reel on a Tallus conventional rod (model TLC-70MHA. This is a very versatile conventional outfit and is perfect for nearly all northeast black drum and striped bass fishing applications when targeting trophy size fish.
We recommend loading both outfits with 50lb Berkley Big Game Braid which is attached to a 5ft length of 50lb Berkley Big Game Fluorocarbon leader using a Mustad Rolling Swivel.
The rig we recommend is a 2-6oz egg sinker threaded above the swivel. The rig is completed with an 8/0 Mustad Ultrapoint Beak Bait style hook. This is an incredibly sharp hook and is the most effective hook when using large live baits, whole dead baits, or chunk baits. The clam baits soaked in Mustad Activate Bait Enhancer made a big difference when the tide slowe and the fish became very finicky.
