Block Island is an incredible fishing destination in the Northeast. Block Island is a great family destination, from spending the day fishing either inshore or offshore or just enjoying the magnificent views.

Where To Moor Your Boat (and more)

We prefer to keep our boat at the Block Island Boat Basin on the Great Salt Pond when we are there.  The Great Salt Pond is well protected and the closest port to the west (Montauk), northwest (CT), and north (RI). You can reach them on VHF Channel 9 or call them at 401-466-2631.

The Block Island Boat Basin most definitely stands out from the others. It has a ship store on site for groceries, boating supplies novelties and gifts, there are showers, tennis courts and a playground. They also have slips and moorings available for short or long term stays. When you are done fishing you can grab a bite or a drink at The Oar Restaurant which offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Offshore Access

Some of the best offshore destinations are a reasonable distance from the point including the following:

  • Butterfish Hole
  • Little Fishtails
  • Fishtails
  • Tip of the Hudson Canyon
  • Texas Tower

But you wont need to go far because some of the best fishing is right off the south side of the island.

Block Island Inshore Species

Just about every inshore and offshore species can be caught, but the most common inshore species include striped bass, bluefish, fluke, sea bass, and porgies. There can be an awesome early season monster fluke bite in the spring. The first stripers arrive in late spring and the bite stays hot right through the late fall (which can be unbelievable). The porgy and sea bass bite is always good and there are numerous party boats that target these fish. For the last few years there has also been a respectable cod bite (though it can be hit and miss at times).

Block Island Surf Fishing

There is plenty of access, though some of the spots require permits that need to be obtained in advance. Stripers and blues are the usual targets. The night bite is frequently more productive than the day bite. The late fall run is simply legendary.

Where to Stay

Island HomeWhen ever we head to Block Island we always stay at The Island Home. The Island Home is a Victorian B&B with soft, relaxing atmosphere. The Inn sits on a hill overlooking the Great Salt Pond , with panoramic views of the harbor, ocean and surrounding countryside. The warm & comfortable setting of the Inn makes it a great place for a couples retreat or a family vacation. The Inn is just a short walk to town, beaches and marinas.

Looking to take yourself around the Island?

Make a stop at Aldo’s Moped’s located on Weldon’s Way right next to the Block Island Ferry. They have moped’s, bikes and car to rent. They also have a wonderful Italian restaurant with great pizza and pasta and ice cream and bakery shop. It is a wonderful family business.
