Flounder

Flounder (winter flounder), a cold-water flatfish, are a prized inshore species along the Northeast Atlantic coast, valued for their mild, white flesh and accessible shallow-water habitats. They are commonly found over muddy or sandy bottoms in bays, estuaries, tidal rivers, and coastal channels, where they ambush small baitfish and crustaceans.

Prime fishing areas include New Jersey’s bays and estuaries, Long Island and Great South Bay in New York, Long Island Sound in Connecticut, Cape Cod and Buzzards Bay in Massachusetts, southern Maine coastal waters, and Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay and Block Island Sound. Winter flounder are most abundant during late fall through early spring, making them a popular target when many other species are less active.

Anglers target winter flounder using bottom rigs with bait such as squid, clams, or minnows, drifting or slow-trolling in shallow waters. State regulations include size and bag limits to maintain sustainable populations.

Overall, winter flounder fishing offers reliable inshore action during the cooler months, providing anglers with fun fishing opportunities and excellent table fare along the Northeast coast.
