New York

Saltwater fishing in New York takes place in the waters around Long Island, New York City, and parts of the lower Hudson River. Major fishing areas include the Long Island Sound, the Atlantic Ocean off Long Island, New York Harbor, and several coastal bays such as Great South Bay. These waters form a productive marine ecosystem that supports many migratory fish species moving along the Atlantic coast.

The fishery is dominated by popular recreational species such as Striped bass, Bluefish, Summer flounder (fluke), Black sea bass, and Scup (porgy). These species are commonly targeted by anglers fishing from beaches, piers, jetties, and boats. Farther offshore, anglers may pursue larger pelagic species such as Atlantic bluefin tuna, Swordfish, and Mahi-mahi, usually through charter or party boat trips.

Fishing activity in New York’s marine waters is highly seasonal because many species migrate along the Atlantic coast. Spring and fall are known for strong runs of striped bass and bluefish, while summer is the peak season for species such as fluke, porgy, and sea bass. Winter fishing is more limited but can include species like cod and pollock offshore.
