Day 12 of 15 - Galapagos Islands - Tsunami Warning - WTF
Santini woke me up this morning and I felt like I had not gotten the 5 hours of sleep I planned on. I was right. It was 4am and he was waking me up because of a tsunami warning! In my travels I have been through tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, and just about every form of “inconvenient” weather you can imagine. This is a first.
The beautiful village of San Cristobal, Galapagos is located in the Port of Barquerezo Mareno which unfortunately faces to the northwest which is the direction the waves will be coming from. No one is concerned about their physical safety, the highlands are less than a mile away. We are very concerned about the seaside businesses owned by our friends. Hopefully the waves will be duds and do no damage.
Mitch and Steve are not too happy. This was supposed to be their first day of fishing and they have closed the entire island down. No planes, no ferries, and no fishing. We plan on drinking heavily and already have a lunch reservation in the highlands.
There are three guys here from Pittsburgh who booked through someone in Miami and have had a bit of a rough time. Their dive schedule was compromised, they fished on the wrong boat with predictable results, and now their flights are cancelled. We plan to distance ourselves from them later in the day when the waves come…
We plan on fishing tomorrow!
