Because tuna chunking is used for smaller tunas such as yellowfin tuna and albacore and larger tunas including giant bluefin which can go over 1000lbs, a broad range of rods and reels are recommended. Going to higher rated rods will allow the angler to put more pressure on bigger fish and shorten the fight time, but may take some of the sport out of fighting smaller fish. Heavier line can also be a handicap when the fish are line-shy. Tuna Chunking Reels
We strongly recommend using only lever drag reels for tuna chunking. Two-speed reels provide an added advantage. Tuna can be notoriously line-shy and for this reason all chunking is done with mono. For even larger fish and added line capacity anglers can use a mono top shot of 100-200ft backed with braid of equal or higher rating. The thinner diameter of the braid provides significant additional line capacity.
Lever drag reels are a must for circle hook fishing (also recommended – see below). The lever drag allows the angler to slowly increase the drag pressure to ensure the proper hook set.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” overflow=”visible” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]
Leader and Connections
There are numerous tips and tricks for tuna chunking rigs. Use at least 6ft of the lightest reasonable f luorocarbon leader. Be prepared to sometimes use leader that is significantly lighter than your main line when the fish are line-shy. We rarely use less than 50lb leader. When targeting giants we use either 130lb or 200lb leader. We connect the leader to the main line using a ball bearing swivel that is rated higher than either the main line or the leader (it just needs to be rated higher than one of them).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” flex_gap_desktop=”10px” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” overflow=”visible” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]
Tuna Chunking Hooks
Many anglers use 4x strong ringed live bait hooks for chunking. However, we also recommend using 2x or 3x circle hooks for several reasons:
These hooks have a smaller visible profile the “J” hooks of the same rating (great for line-shy fish)
Circle hooks virtually ensure the hook will set on the corner of the mouth reducing the chance that the tuna’s teeth will chafe through the leader
Circle hooks ensure the least amount of damage to fish that are destined to be released
We recommend the Black Magic Fighting Belt and Harness. This is a uniquely designed belt and harness system that helps prevent side-to side slippage while reducing back strain. It offers true seat conformation, more stability and fighting leverage![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
Frequently Asked Questions
For tuna chunking, a conventional stand-up rod between 5'6" to 6'6" is recommended, rated for 30lb mono line or higher. This range accommodates smaller tunas like yellowfin and albacore as well as larger species such as giant bluefin tuna. Using higher rated rods can help put more pressure on bigger fish and reduce fight times, though heavier setups may reduce the sport with smaller fish.
Lever drag reels are strongly recommended for tuna chunking because they allow anglers to slowly and precisely increase drag pressure, which is important for proper hook sets, especially when using circle hooks. Two-speed models provide additional advantages. All chunking should be done with monofilament line due to tuna's line-shyness, but a mono top shot backed with braid can add line capacity for larger fish.
Anglers should use at least 6 feet of the lightest reasonable fluorocarbon leader, often lighter than the main line for line-shy tuna. A minimum of 50lb leader is typical, with heavier leaders like 130lb or 200lb used for very large tuna. The leader should be connected to the main line via a ball bearing swivel rated higher than either line to ensure durability and prevent line twists.
Circle hooks have a smaller visible profile than similarly rated J-hooks, which helps when targeting line-shy tuna. They also virtually guarantee that the hook sets on the corner of the fish's mouth, reducing the risk that the tuna's teeth will chafe through the leader. Additionally, circle hooks cause less damage to fish that are released, promoting conservation and better fish handling.
For tuna under 50lbs, use 30-50lb monofilament line. Tuna weighing 50-100lbs require 50-80lb mono, 100-250lbs tuna typically use 80lb mono, and giant tuna over 250lbs demand 80-130lb or higher rated line. Adjusting line strength helps anglers manage fight times and handle fish appropriately while considering line-shyness.
The Black Magic Fighting Belt and Harness is recommended because its unique design prevents side-to-side slippage and reduces back strain during the fight. It offers true seat conformation, greater stability, and improved leverage, which helps anglers fight powerful tuna more comfortably and effectively.
