A week at Block Island

Island Home

The accommodations, food, and company were incredible, but there was only one thing  that out did it all…the fishing!

We spent the past week at the gorgeous Island Home run by Dina and Dave Chieffo with their top notch crew (John, Hank and Ryan).

Every day was filled with good company and great fun. On Tuesday I got to watch some of the surf rats who were also staying at the inn tie up some eel plugs, which I had never seen before. Later that night after dinner Hank decided to teach Lauren Santini a little tango, foxtrot and everything in between, which Tommy and I just couldn’t resist trying to film so hopefully it will make the cut after the final editing.

Wednesday, Andy, Tommy, Jeff Pierce, Scott (our producer) and myself got into an intense plugging bite off the North Rip early in the morning and then switched over to eeling later in the day which was just as fast paced and yielded some monster fish.

Thursday was a tough yet successful day. We dealt with dense fog, high winds and a building swell, but we worked through it all and caught plenty of fish up to 45lbs.

Jeff, Taylor and Jerrit

Friday was our last day of fishing and we got a moderate 7am start, but that didn’t stop us from getting on the bass bite once again. Jeff and Tommy were battling it out with their two monster eels the worked hard to fish out of the livewell, with Jeff using 40lb braid and a Demon Perfect Circle hook (39951BLN 6/0) and Tommy going the traditional route with 20lb mono and an Octopus Beak Bait hook (92553BL 6/0).  We ran in to be greeted by 100 degree temps in the harbor, grabbed a very quick lunch and took Jeff’s boys Taylor and Jerrit for some bottom fishing and talk about a mixed bag…fluke, porgies, seabass and a 5lb blackfish. We ended the day with a ridiculous eel bite once again getting Taylor and Jerrit their first stripers ever, what a great feeling.

Can’t wait for next year!
